چکیده

These notes are an extended transcript of two lectures given at the University of Ottawa during the workshop “Group actions, generalized cohomology theories, and affine algebraic geometry." The first lecture was a general introduction to A1-homotopy theory focusing on motivating the choice of definitions in the construction, together with a definition of A1-contractible spaces. The second lecture attempted to understand A1-connectedness in greater detail, and to use this to understand better the relationship betweenA1-contractibility and topological contractibility. I have taken the liberty of including some material in these notes that I hoped to (but was unable) to discuss in the lectures. In particular, I have included some problems which I felt might be interesting to different groups of participants. Disclaimer: these notes were not carefully proofread; please e-mail me with any comments, corrections or questions.

Contractibility and fixed point property: the case of Khalimsky topological spaces

*Correspondence: [email protected] Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Department of Mathematics Education, Chonbuk National University, Jeonju-City, Jeonbuk 54896, Republic of Korea Abstract Based on the notions of both contractibility and local contractibility, many works were done in fixed point theory. The present paper concerns a relation between digital contractibility and the exist...

Resolving the Topological Social Choice Paradox

1.1. Topological Social Choice Theory. Social choice theory aims to understand the nature of, and provide methods for, the aggregation of individual preferences to yield a social preference which is fair and satisfactory to individual voters on an axiomatic ground. An important example of this is in popular elections. In the 1980s, Chichilnisky and colleagues developed a topological approach pi...

Mitigating Non-contractible Actions by Randomness

This paper studies non-contractibility of a contract designer's actions in an agency model with costly monitoring. It shows that non-contractibility may lead to an explicit randomness, which is not optimal under full contractibility. The randomness mitigates non-contractibility. Its e ectiveness increases with the ex post deducibility of the non-contractible variable. Mitigation is perfect, if ...

Contractibility and Contractible Approximations of Soft Global Constraints

We study contractibility and its approximation for two very general classes of soft global constraints. We introduce a general formulation of decomposition-based soft constraints and provide a sufficient condition for contractibility and an approach to approximation. For edit-based soft constraints, we establish that the tightest contractible approximation cannot be expressed in edit-based term...

Module contractibility for semigroup algebras

In this paper, we nd the relationships between module contractibility of aBanach algebra and its ideals. We also prove that module contractibility ofa Banach algebra is equivalent to module contractibility of its module uniti-zation. Finally, we show that when a maximal group homomorphic image ofan inverse semigroup S with the set of idempotents E is nite, the moduleprojective tensor product l1...
